Coldplay was playing a massive show yesterday evening in Portland, Oregon when they received the news of Tom Petty’s passing, and this was the only fitting tribute.

Coldplay held a minute of silence at their “Head Full of Dreams” show in Portland after hearing that Tom Petty passed away on October 2nd of cardiac arrest. The band said, “When words fail, sometimes silence is the most eloquent.” Watch Chris Martin and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck pay tribute to Tom Petty with a touching performance of Free Fallin’:

 

 

Tom Petty, whose worldwide sales reached 80 million records, was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2002, and passed away suddenly at the age of 66 after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu, California.
