TRAGICALLY HIP DAY: AUGUST 3, 2016 IN THE CITY OF CALGARY

WHEREAS On May 24th, the Tragically Hip announced that lead singer Gord Downie has terminal cancer and that they’d tour one last time this Summer, with 2 shows in Calgary August 1st and 3rd at the Scotiabank Saddledome;

AND WHEREAS The Tragically Hip is known as the quintessential Canadian rock band, representing Canada as much as maple syrup and hockey;

AND WHEREAS For over three decades, their albums have been the soundtrack to GORD FM’s listener’s lives, with 9 of their 14 studio albums reaching # 1 in Canada, winning numerous Music Awards including 14 Juno’s;

AND WHEREAS: The Tragically Hip have made a strong cultural and economical impact in Calgary performing numerous times between 1988 and 2016, at venues including the Max Bell Centre, Race City, Fort Calgary, Millennium Park, Mac Hall, the Jubilee Auditorium and the Saddledome;

AND WHEREAS Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was quoted saying “Gord is someone I’ve met a number of times over the years, and his status as an extraordinary Canadian creative force and icon is not to be understated”;

AND WHEREAS GORD FM would like to officially thank “The Hip” for the years of music and memories we cherish as proud Canadians:

NOW, THEREFORE, GORD FM DOES HEREBY PROCLAIM, today, Wednesday, August 3, 2016 as “TRAGICALLY HIP DAY” in the City of Calgary.
